Abstract

Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) is a radar technique used in remote sensing for earth observation. The technique utilizes the difference in the phase of waves returning to synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite. By using two SAR images, Digital Elevation Model (DEM) or map of surface deformation can be generated. It is also powerful tool for measuring earth surface deformation due to volcanic activity, earthquake, ground water migration and anthropogenic activity. Until the late 20th century, the measurements of Earth’s deformation were time consuming, expensive and possibly dangerous because the observer had to be physically present at the location. InSAR, as alternative method, overcomes such practical limitations and not putting the observer safety and expensive equipment in jeopardy. In term of speed and cost, InSAR is faster and cheaper than on ground observation. Terabytes of InSAR data, scanning the Earth, were collected by many satellites for many decades, such as ERS-1, ERS-2, ALOS PALSAR, TerraSAR-X, RADARSAT and COSMO SKYMED. Since SAR image is different with optical image, the need for training to process and interpret of these important data sets is critical. InSAR is also being increasingly used in studies of cryosphere (motion of ice sheets and glaciers) and atmosphere. New technique and applications of InSAR are being developing all time, while this tutorial will focus on the fundamental of InSAR, basic processing and application for new users.
