Abstract

Background: Food contamination within global supply chains poses significant public health concerns. This paper presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of research trends in food contamination within global supply chains from 2005 to 2025.
Scope and approach: A total of 929 publications from the Web of Science (WoS) and 715 from Scopus were examined. The analysis reveals a shift from detection-centred methods to prevention-focused strategies.
Key findings and conclusions: Four key thematic clusters have been identified as the main pillars of the future research framework: (1) detection and analysis, (2) risk assessment and management, (3) international trade and regulation, and (4) environmental factors and sustainability. Critical research gaps include the synergistic effects of multiple contaminants, contamination risks at the consumer level, implementation challenges in resource-limited settings, and culturally appropriate risk communication strategies. We propose a research framework and outline future research directions to address these gaps through multi-contaminant modelling, consumer-centred interventions, and context-appropriate implementation.
