Abstract

to the machine productivity. Thus, by implementing quick changeover, the setup time can be reduced. The purpose of quick changeover other than reducing setup time is to eliminate the wastage of non-value added activities involved during the changeover process. Quick changeover (QCO) is a structured approach to analyse the activities which take place during a changeover and which later sequencing, eliminating or reducing the activities required to complete the process. While changeover time is the duration of time that is measured from the completion of the last piece on the current batch to the completion of the first good piece of the next batch. Quick changeover is also referred as Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED). There are six stages of quick changeover. The stages of quick changeover are documenting current process, separation of internal and external elements, move external elements to external, shorten internal and external elements and standardize the new procedure. Based on studying the current process, the total changeover time is 2 hours 57 minutes and 39 seconds. Quick changeover also focuses on recognition of internal and external elements. Internal elements are where the changeover steps have to be done while the machine is stopped and external elements are where the changeover steps can be done while the machine is still running. 5S is implemented in shorten external elements stage which will help to eliminate waste and maintain efficient, safe and clean workplace organisation. The last stage of quick changeover is standardizing and documenting the steps of the changeover. Throughout the project, the reduction of time for the changeover is 18%. Although the percentage of the time reduction was not high, the impact on the downtime of CNC machine of the company is high. The changeover saves about 31 minutes on the downtime which will lower the loss of the productivity. In conclusion, quick changeover reduces the changeover time by 18%. Quick changeover can help lower the downtime of a machine and allow more frequent changeover in order to increase the production flexibility.
