Abstract

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a common childhood disability, with prevalence estimated to be between 1.5 to over 4 per thousand live births or children of a certain age from population-based surveys worldwide. Partial Body Weight Supported Treadmill Training (PBWSTT) with harness seat treadmills has been introduced to improve the stride length and step length for children with CP. However, specialized physiotherapy treadmills designed for children with CP are not yet available in Malaysia. This study aims to assess the level of awareness, understanding, and usability of the user requirement for the Physio-Treadmill (PhyMill) using a quantitative survey. The research also analyzes the optimal body position of children with cerebral palsy on a PhyMill using biomechanics single-action analysis in digital human modeling (DHM). Additionally, this research intends to investigate the impact of PhyMill on CP patients. A quantitative survey was used to assess PhyMill user demand in terms of awareness, knowledge, and usability. In addition, children with cerebral palsy who are receiving treatment at the Kuantan Physical Therapy Center (KPTC) have been used as subjects in a study to determine the optimal position of the body and each patient with cerebral palsy has to undergo a total of four therapy sessions. The method used is Digital Human Modeling (DHM), especially Biomechanics Single Action Analysis in CATIA V5. For impact analysis, the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Dynamic Gait Index (DGI), and Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living (Katz ADL) were investigated. The results from the quantitative survey showed that only 17 people or 31% of the total were familiar with the treatment of CP, and about 45% had a high level of knowledge about the disease. Two recommendations for improving the design of Biomechanics Single-Action analysis were obtained, with the largest optimization option given to designers being an improvement to PhyMill. In terms of impact, Patient 3 has reached the maximum score on the BBS, and Patient 2 has the highest DGI score of the three patients with a score of four. Katz ADL did not provide significant insight. In summary, the findings will guide the improvement of PhyMill explore the importance of biomechanics in product design, and maximize user efficiency.
